About accuRegister
Submitted by John and Kris Savage, Owners

The start of the company and computer program:

AccuRegister started in 1993, when we sensed a need to have paper records,
previously contained in flock books, transferred to a computer database
program.

When Kris, my wife, became the registrar the Border Leicester Association, she
was given the flock books that contained all the pedigrees, and information, that
had been handed down from each previous registrar. Pedigree searches were
done manually by looking- up the past generations to produce a pedigree. We
looked at the process and decided we could make it more efficient by using a
database.

At the time, I was working on designing a program for a dental office that
needed specific requirements. Omnis, which was far ahead of its time, was a
database that could be modified to meet the needs of any organization. The
program was in use by Harris Bank and Federal Express.

At first, the program I designed was not very sophisticated. It could record the
child and parents of any animal, but it could not produce a pedigree. Although, I
had been trained as a programmer in Basic and Fortran in the early 70s, I was
not familiar with the Pascal like language that Omnis had to offer. In time, I
learned Pascal, and was able to build a very good registration program that now
serves as the backbone for what we use today.

Basically, I designed the program from the start and I can make Omnis, now
called Studio, do almost anything!

At this point, we serve six organizations that register sheep and goats in the US.
Our on-line registration service is in the final stages, and we are continually
improving our registration services. We recently started wikibreedia.com, a free
listing/information site that anyone can use.

We will continue to grow and remain a personalized service. We will always be
there when you need us.

Meet the Owners of accuRegister, John and Kris Savage, and their sheep:

In 1983, three years after we were married, we began raising sheep on a five
acre farm in Eastern Pennsylvania. At first, there were only a few animals that a
local farmer had donated. We lovingly prepared our little barn, bought feed and
hay, and began a lifelong journey that has since become a passion.

In 1997, after many moves, three children, and lots of sheep, we arrived in our
present home just Northwest of Pittsburgh, PA. Our present flock of Katahdins
keeps us busy each day, but there is more to the story of John and Kris raising
sheep.

I remember the first time we sheared a Romney cross using "Raising Sheep the
Modern Way" as a guide. (It was not pretty!) Then came the Border Leicesters,
many crosses, Merinos, and even the Angora Goats. At one time we had a flock
of over 150 animals. Talk about overload! When spring lambing season came, I
honestly don't think we slept a wink.

When we are not registering sheep, we are out doing chores and caring for our
Katahdins. In short, it is a good mix that keeps us doing the things we love the
most: caring for our animals and making sure the records we keep for others
are accurate and up to date.
